The Commodore C64 was produced with two variants of the SID sound chip – the original MOS 6581 and the later MOS 8580 revision. While they are fundamentally the same chip, there is a distinct difference in the audio output.
I mainly work with the VICE C64 emulator set to the 8580 variant, and this is also true for this release. Tracks #1 and #2 are the original versions – recorded directly on the PC from the emulator. Audio glitches I could not get rid of in the C64 software were edited out in post-production. Otherwise, the sound is unaltered.
Then I thought it might be interesting for listeners to get to know the differences in sound between the two SID chip versions and also between emulated sound and sound recorded from original hardware. Tracks #3 and #4 are recorded from emulation (set to the original 6581), also with glitches edited out. Tracks #5-#8 are recorded from two original machines, with no post-production except adjustments in volume.
Track #9 is a remix based on the 4 different recordings.
